Prompt

Plain definition: A prompt is the instruction or question you type into an AI tool. It’s how you tell the AI what you want it to do.

In plain terms

A prompt is like a work order you hand to a very capable assistant. The clearer and more specific your work order, the better the result you get back. Vague orders produce vague work; detailed orders produce useful output.

Why it matters for operators

The quality of what an AI gives you depends almost entirely on the quality of your prompt. Business owners who learn to write clear prompts consistently get better output—faster—than those who type one sentence and hope for the best. You don’t need to code; you just need to learn to give clear instructions, the same way you’d brief a new hire.

Example

A weak prompt: “Write me a social post.” A stronger prompt: “Write a 150-word Instagram caption for a local coffee shop announcing our new seasonal latte. Friendly tone. Include a call to action to visit this weekend.” The second prompt takes 20 extra seconds to write and produces something you can actually use.
