Temperature (AI Setting)

Plain definition: Temperature is a setting that controls how creative or predictable an AI’s responses are. A low temperature produces more focused, consistent answers; a high temperature produces more varied, surprising, and sometimes unexpected ones.

In plain terms

Imagine a dial from “by the book” to “free spirit.” Turn it low and the AI sticks to the most expected, reliable answer. Turn it high and it gets more experimental—sometimes brilliantly creative, sometimes off the rails. Most everyday tools set this automatically; you’d only adjust it if you’re building something custom.

Why it matters for operators

If you’re using an AI API to build a tool, temperature is one of the first settings to understand. For tasks like data extraction, classification, or following strict instructions, keep it low. For brainstorming, creative writing, or generating tagline options, a higher setting gives you more range. Getting it wrong means either robotic repetition or unpredictable gibberish.

Example

A franchise owner builds an AI tool to auto-categorize customer feedback into preset buckets. They set the temperature to 0.1 so every similar comment gets the same category every time. For their separate “generate new menu name ideas” feature, they use 0.9 to get wilder, more inventive suggestions.
