Google Gemini

Google Gemini is Google’s family of AI models and the assistant interface built on top of them. It’s available as a standalone chat product at gemini.google.com and is also embedded throughout Google Workspace — Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Drive, and Meet. For operators already living in Google’s ecosystem, it’s the AI with the shortest integration path.

What it is

Gemini comes in several model tiers: Flash (fast and affordable), Pro (balanced), and Ultra/Advanced (most capable). The chat interface is free to use with limits; Gemini Advanced ($19.99/month via Google One AI Premium) unlocks the most capable model, extended context, and deeper Workspace integration. Gemini has native multimodality — it can natively handle text, images, audio, video, and code. It also has real-time Google Search integration, so it can access current information.

What it’s best at

  • Working directly in Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides (via the Workspace add-on)
  • Summarizing and searching across Google Drive files
  • Tasks that benefit from current web data — it searches Google by default
  • Processing images and video alongside text in a single prompt
  • Long-context tasks — Gemini supports very large context windows
  • Generating Google Sheets formulas and analyzing spreadsheet data

How operators use it

Operators using Google Workspace find Gemini’s integration practical rather than impressive: draft a reply in Gmail (“help me respond to this complaint professionally”), summarize a long document in Drive, or ask it to write a formula in Sheets. The “Gemini in Docs” sidebar means you don’t have to leave the document to get AI help. For teams that share Google Drives, Gemini can search across your team’s files to answer questions — a useful feature if your knowledge base lives in Docs and Sheets.

Getting started & pricing

  • Free: Access to Gemini 1.5 Flash with usage limits at gemini.google.com
  • Google One AI Premium ($19.99/month): Gemini Advanced (Ultra model), Gemini in all Workspace apps, 2TB storage
  • Google Workspace Business plans: Gemini for Workspace add-on available; pricing depends on existing Workspace plan
  • API (Google AI Studio / Vertex AI): Pay-per-token, Gemini Flash starts very low; Gemini Pro is $1.25–$5 per 1M tokens depending on context

Start at gemini.google.com with your existing Google account. For Workspace integration, enable Gemini from the Google Admin console or through Google One AI Premium.

Bottom line

Gemini’s strongest argument is convenience: if your team already pays for Google Workspace, the integration is hard to beat. For general AI tasks, it’s competitive with ChatGPT and Claude. Where it pulls ahead is Workspace-native use — drafting in Docs, formula help in Sheets, summarizing emails. If your business runs on Google, explore Gemini before adding another subscription.
