Midjourney
Midjourney is an AI image generator known for producing highly polished, aesthetically refined visuals from text prompts. It sits in its own category for artistic and brand imagery—the output tends to look intentional and finished rather than generic, which is why it became the tool many designers and marketers reach for first.
What it is
Midjourney is a subscription image-generation service. You submit a text prompt (and optionally a reference image), and the model returns four image options. You can upscale, vary, remix, or zoom out from any result. As of 2024–2025 Midjourney is available both through Discord and through a web interface at midjourney.com. The underlying model is updated regularly; version 6.1 introduced stronger photorealism and better text rendering.
What it’s best at
- Generating hero images, blog headers, and social visuals with a consistent artistic style
- Creating concept art and mood boards for product or brand direction
- Producing lifestyle and scene imagery without a photo shoot
- Building consistent character or brand mascot visuals across multiple images
- Rapid iteration on visual directions—dozens of options in minutes
How operators use it
A boutique consulting firm uses Midjourney to create custom imagery for every client report instead of reusing stock photos. A product team generates dozens of packaging concepts in an afternoon, picks two directions, and presents them to stakeholders before committing to a designer. A content marketer creates on-brand blog header images with a consistent visual style—same color palette, same aesthetic—by referencing a style image in every prompt, eliminating the inconsistency of stock photo searches.
Getting started & pricing
There is no longer a free tier. The Basic plan ($10/month) provides about 200 image generations per month in “fast” GPU time. The Standard plan ($30/month) adds 15 hours of fast GPU and unlimited “relax mode” generations, which queue slower but have no hard cap—this is the most common plan for regular users. The Pro plan ($60/month) adds stealth mode (private images) and more fast hours. All plans allow commercial use. The web interface has made onboarding considerably easier than the original Discord-only workflow.
Bottom line
Midjourney produces the most consistently high-quality artistic output of any image generator available to non-designers. If your goal is imagery that looks polished and intentional, it is hard to beat. Its weaknesses are precise compositional control (you are guiding, not directing) and exact text rendering in images, though version 6 improved both significantly. For operators who produce regular visual content and don’t have a dedicated designer, the Standard plan pays for itself quickly.
