HeyGen
HeyGen is an AI video platform that turns scripts, documents, and even existing video recordings into polished presenter videos using AI avatars. It sits in a similar space to Synthesia but has leaned harder into real-time video translation and interactive avatar capabilities, making it popular for sales, marketing, and global content teams.
What it is
HeyGen is a browser-based tool for generating AI avatar videos from text or existing footage. You can build a video from a typed script, or upload a video of yourself and use HeyGen’s Video Translation feature to dub it into another language—with your mouth movements re-synced to match the new audio. It also offers an “Instant Avatar” mode for creating a digital twin from a short recording, and a streaming avatar API for real-time interactive video applications.
What it’s best at
- Translating and dubbing existing videos into other languages with lip-sync—their standout feature
- Creating personalized video messages at scale (e.g., sales outreach with the recipient’s name spoken aloud)
- Building avatar-led product demos, explainers, and onboarding flows
- Generating a personal digital avatar for consistent brand presence across content
- Powering interactive AI video agents for customer-facing use cases via API
How operators use it
A B2B sales team records one product demo video and uses HeyGen to generate personalized versions for each prospect—different name, different company reference—spoken aloud by the avatar. A startup with international customers records a founder video once in English, then uses Video Translation to produce Spanish, French, and German versions for their website without hiring translators or voice actors. A course creator builds a personal avatar from a 30-minute recording and uses it to produce supplemental lesson videos without re-filming.
Getting started & pricing
HeyGen’s free tier gives one credit per month (roughly one minute of video) to test the platform. The Creator plan ($29/month billed annually) provides 15 credits per month and access to most avatar types. The Team plan ($89/month per seat) adds unlimited seat access, advanced avatars, and priority rendering. Video Translation is priced separately at around $0.10 per minute of translated video beyond what is included in the plan. Pricing has shifted in 2024–2025; check heygen.com for current tiers.
Bottom line
HeyGen’s video translation and personalization capabilities are genuinely differentiated. If you already create video content and want to reach audiences who speak other languages, or if you want to add a personal touch to outreach at scale, it solves a real problem cheaply. Avatar quality is roughly comparable to Synthesia. The main limitation is the same as the category overall: outputs work well for informational or sales content, and less well when emotional authenticity is the point.
