AI for Financial Advisors

Financial advisors spend a disproportionate amount of time on communication: client updates, market commentary, meeting prep notes, educational content, and prospect outreach. These are important touchpoints, but they’re also time-consuming writing tasks. AI can handle the drafting work so you spend more time on advice and relationships — and less time staring at a blank document.

Where AI helps most

Client communication is the most immediate opportunity. Writing personalized quarterly updates, translating market events into plain-English client emails, and preparing meeting agendas all follow patterns that AI handles well. Content marketing is another strong area: advisors who publish consistently on LinkedIn or via a newsletter attract organic leads, and AI makes that content production sustainable for a solo or small-team practice.

Top use cases

  • Client newsletter drafts: Write monthly or quarterly updates that explain market conditions in plain language your clients appreciate.
  • Meeting prep summaries: Summarize a client’s situation and goals into a briefing document before review meetings.
  • Educational content: Produce explainer articles on planning topics — Roth conversions, Social Security timing, estate basics — for your website or newsletter.
  • LinkedIn and social posts: Draft thought leadership content that positions you as a trusted resource.
  • Prospect follow-up emails: Write the follow-up sequence after an initial consultation that moves prospects toward becoming clients.
  • Proposal narratives: Draft the written explanation sections of financial plans before your review.

Where to start

Start with your client newsletter. If you send one regularly, it probably takes a few hours each time to research, write, and edit. Use AI to draft the next one: give it a few bullet points about what happened in the markets this quarter and what you want clients to take away, and ask for a 400-word client-friendly summary. Edit for accuracy and your voice — you’ll cut production time significantly.

Tools worth trying

ChatGPT or Claude — For drafting all client communications and educational content. Redtail CRM and Wealthbox — Practice management platforms; check for AI-assisted communication features. Catchlight — Prospect intelligence and outreach platform designed for advisors. Microsoft Copilot — Valuable if your practice runs on Outlook and Word for all client correspondence.

A word of caution

Financial advice is regulated under SEC, FINRA, and state rules. AI-generated content that looks like personalized investment advice or makes specific recommendations can create compliance problems. All client-facing content needs review against your firm’s compliance policies before it goes out. Also, client financial data is confidential — keep specific account information, holdings, and balances out of general AI tools. Use AI for the communication framework, not for producing advice.
