AI Agent
Plain definition: An AI agent is an AI system that can take actions—not just generate text. It can browse the web, use software, send emails, run searches, and make a series of decisions to complete a multi-step task with minimal human involvement.
In plain terms
Most AI tools are like a very smart notepad—you give input, they give output. An AI agent is more like a capable assistant with computer access: you give them a goal, and they figure out the steps, do the work, and report back. They can pull data, fill out forms, send messages, and loop through tasks without you having to do each step.
Why it matters for operators
Agents are where AI goes from “saves me 10 minutes” to “handles an entire workflow.” For business owners, they represent the next wave of automation—handling lead research, appointment prep, invoice follow-up, or competitive monitoring while you focus elsewhere. They’re still maturing, so human review of their outputs is important, but the productivity potential is significant.
Example
A sales manager sets up an AI agent to prep for new prospect calls. Given a company name, the agent searches LinkedIn, the company website, and recent news—then writes a one-page brief with key facts, potential pain points, and suggested talking points—all before the rep picks up the phone.
