AI Copilot

Plain definition: An AI copilot is an AI assistant built into a software tool that helps you work faster by suggesting, drafting, or completing tasks as you go — while you stay in control. It works alongside you rather than replacing you.

In plain terms

The term comes from aviation: a copilot handles specific tasks and supports the captain, but the captain is still flying the plane. An AI copilot in software does the same thing — it drafts the email while you decide if it’s right, suggests the next step while you choose whether to take it, or fills in the spreadsheet while you review the numbers. You’re not automating yourself out; you’re moving faster with assistance.

Why it matters for operators

AI copilots are showing up in everyday business tools — Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, HubSpot, QuickBooks, and many others. They reduce the effort of routine knowledge work: drafting documents, summarizing data, answering questions about your own records. You don’t need to use them for everything, but knowing where a copilot is available in your existing tools can save meaningful time each week.

Example

A sales manager uses the AI copilot in her CRM to prepare for customer calls. She clicks “Summarize account” and gets a one-paragraph brief on recent activity, open deals, and last contact date — in seconds, without digging through records herself.
