Notion AI

Notion AI is the AI layer built into Notion, the popular all-in-one workspace tool. It helps you write, summarize, and find information inside your Notion pages and databases. Unlike standalone AI tools, Notion AI knows your actual workspace content — meeting notes, project docs, wikis — not just what you paste into a chat window.

What it is

Notion AI is an add-on to any Notion plan that enables AI features throughout the workspace. These include an inline writing assistant (accessible by typing “/” or pressing the spacebar on a blank block), an AI chat sidebar that can answer questions based on your workspace content, AI-powered summaries for long pages or databases, and autofill for database properties — for example, automatically generating a one-line summary for each row in a project tracker. The underlying models are a combination of OpenAI and Anthropic depending on the task.

What it’s best at

  • Drafting content directly inside Notion pages — briefs, proposals, SOPs, meeting agendas
  • Summarizing long meeting notes or research pages with one click
  • Answering questions about your workspace: “what decisions did we make about the rebrand?”
  • Auto-filling database properties at scale — status summaries, tags, one-liners
  • Translating, reformatting, or changing the tone of existing text in-page
  • Converting rough notes into structured documents

How operators use it

Operators who already run their business in Notion find AI most useful for reducing the gap between “captured notes” and “usable documentation.” Common pattern: after a meeting, paste raw notes into Notion and ask AI to produce a structured summary with action items. Another: maintain a client database and use AI autofill to generate a one-sentence summary of each account’s status from linked notes. The Q&A feature over workspace content is underused — instead of searching through 40 pages for a policy, you can ask “what’s our refund policy” and it finds and summarizes the answer.

Getting started & pricing

  • Notion AI add-on: $10/member/month (added on top of any Notion plan, including Free)
  • Notion Plus ($12/month): Recommended base plan for most operators, includes better block limits
  • Business ($18/month): Private teamspaces, advanced permissions, SAML SSO

If you already use Notion, add AI from Settings > Plans. The AI assistant appears anywhere in Notion via the space bar or “/” menu. New to Notion? Sign up at notion.so — the free plan with AI add-on is a low-cost way to test both products together.

Bottom line

Notion AI earns its $10/month for operators who already live in Notion. The value is context — it works on your actual content, not a blank slate. If you’re not a Notion user already, the AI add-on alone isn’t a reason to switch from your current tools. But for existing Notion users spending time manually summarizing notes and searching for information, AI cuts that work significantly.
