Retool

Retool is a low-code platform for building internal tools — dashboards, admin panels, data editors, and operational interfaces that connect directly to your databases and APIs. It’s built for developers or technically-inclined operators who need custom business tools faster than writing them from scratch.

What it is

Retool provides a drag-and-drop UI builder (tables, forms, charts, buttons, modals) that connects to real data sources: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Mongo, Airtable, REST APIs, GraphQL, Stripe, Salesforce, and more. You build the interface visually and write JavaScript snippets to handle logic — filtering, transforming, triggering actions. Retool also has a workflow builder (similar to n8n) for backend automation, and an AI integration layer for embedding LLM calls inside your tools. It runs in the cloud or can be self-hosted.

What it’s best at

  • Building internal admin interfaces without a full engineering team
  • Creating data editors that let non-technical staff view and update database records safely
  • Building operations dashboards that pull from multiple data sources at once
  • Order management, customer support, and fulfillment tools that wrap around existing databases
  • Replacing spreadsheets that have outgrown their purpose and need a proper UI
  • Rapid prototyping of internal tools that would otherwise wait months in a dev queue

How operators use it

The classic Retool use case is an internal admin panel: you have a database of orders, customers, or inventory, and your team currently accesses it through raw database queries or a clunky spreadsheet export. In Retool, you build a table that shows live data, add filter controls, add a form for editing records, and give it to your operations staff. They interact with the data through a clean UI without ever touching SQL. Operators with AI workflows use Retool to build interfaces where staff can review, approve, or override AI-generated outputs before they’re acted on.

Getting started & pricing

  • Free: 5 users, 5 apps, standard sources — enough for a small team to evaluate seriously
  • Team ($10/user/month): Unlimited apps and sources, version history, staging environments
  • Business ($50/user/month): Custom branding, audit logs, advanced permissions, SSO
  • Self-hosted: Available on Team and Business plans; requires server infrastructure

Start at retool.com. Connect a data source first (even a Google Sheet works), then drag in a Table component pointing to that source. The free tier is functional enough to build a complete internal tool before committing to a paid plan.

Bottom line

Retool is the right tool when you have real data in a database or API and need a proper interface for your team to work with it. It’s not the right choice if you’re starting from scratch with no data infrastructure — that’s where Airtable or Notion fits better. But for operators sitting on a database and building internal tools on top of it, Retool dramatically cuts the time from “I need a UI for this” to “my team is using it.”
